MT EVEREST DARING MISSION TURNS SOUR
A Kenyan climber has sadly lost his life attempting to reach the peak of Everest, the tallest mountain on our planet, and his heroic Nepali guide remains missing in the icy slopes, according to details emerging today from tourism authorities.
Joshua Cheruiyot Kirui, a brave 40-year-old adventurer, and his experienced 44-year-old guide Nawang Sherpa were last heard from on Wednesday morning as they attempted the final steps to standing atop the world.
Despite valiant search efforts, the grim news increases the toll for this climbing season on the dangerous but alluring 29,032-foot-high massif to at least three souls lost pursuing their dreams of conquering nature's greatest feat.
“The team have found the Kenyan climber dead between the summit and the
Hillary Step, but his guide is still missing,” Khim Lal Gautam, chief of the
tourism’s department field office at the base camp, said.
He embarked on a perilous quest to scale the
summit sans supplemental oxygen, accompanied by his Nepali climbing partner
Nawang Sherpa, whose fate remained uncertain, according to rescuers. He and
Nawang Sherpa, who had joined him in his bold objective, were no longer able to
be found amidst the mountain's perilous slopes, rescuers reported.
The pair disappeared high on the mountain pursuing their
ambitious goal, leaving their ultimate fate unclear but intensifying concern
for their safety in the extreme environment. A search continued for any signs
of the experienced climbers.
