As per TEAMtalk Jadon Sancho's performance and future at Dortmund following his loan from Manchester United had been turbulent. Sancho played only three times for Man Utd in 2023-24 before being left out of the squad due to training issues. Despite public criticism and a social media response, Sancho was not reintegrated into the squad without an apology, which he did not provide.
Sancho made a promising start at Dortmund with early assists and standout displays, but faced criticism for inconsistent form and occasional fitness concerns. Despite going through a dry spell in front of goal, he silenced doubters with a crucial strike against Werder Bremen, showcasing improved play and vigor. His impressive showing in the Champions League match against PSG earned high praise from Rio Ferdinand, hinting that Dortmund fans could see the England international reach new heights and fulfill his tremendous potential in the coming months if he maintained his form.
2. COUTINHO
FROM BARCELONA TO BAYERN MUNICH
Coutinho signed for Barcelona in
January 2018, winning two La Liga titles. He was then loaned to Bayern Munich
for the 2019-20 season, where he won the Bundesliga, DFB-Pokal, and UEFA
Champions League. However, his loan spell was not made permanent, and he
returned to Barcelona at the end of the season. Scored 8 goals on 23
appearances for Bayern.
3. MOHAMMED SALAH
FROM CHELSEA TO FIORENTINA
In February 2015, Chelsea loaned Mohamed Salah to Fiorentina for 18 months as part of a transfer that saw Juan Cuadrado move to Chelsea. Salah's impact was immediate and profound, scoring on his debut and continuing his excellent form with further goals and assists throughout his loan spell. His stellar performances were integral to Fiorentina's success, helping them advance in the Europa League and earn hard-fought victories over elite opposition in Serie A.
At season's end, Fiorentina made an attempt to solidify Salah's stay by signing him permanently, but he refused in favor of joining fellow Italian giants Roma. Furious at losing such a talisman, Fiorentina lodged an aggressive complaint with FIFA claiming Chelsea had violated their agreement, though their protest was ultimately dismissed.
4. JAMES RODRIGUEZ
FROM REAL MADRID TO BAYERN MUNICH
FC Bayern München and Real Madrid have agreed on a two-year loan deal for Colombian international James RodrÃguez, with an option for Bayern to buy the player.
OneFootball Videos reported that Rummenigge said "After speaking with James personally, it was clear he wished to have a guaranteed starting role. While he was an important player for us, we want players who are fully committed to being Bayern stars. James wants to lead the line somewhere and fulfill his ambitions, so this move allows that while respecting our needs. We appreciate his honesty and contributions, and wish him the best."
5. DANI CEBALLOS
FROM REAL MADRID TO ARSENAL
Dani Ceballos, a Real Madrid footballer, spent two consecutive seasons on loan at Arsenal. In an interview, Ceballos revealed that Mikel Arteta was instrumental in his choice to remain on loan for another year. Under Arteta's guidance, Ceballos felt he matured immensely as a player, taking huge strides in his development during his time at the club.
Working directly with Arteta, Ceballos gained valuable experience and coaching that elevated his game. He expressed gratitude for the faith shown in him by Arteta, who helped optimize his talents on the pitch. Though his spell was cut short by a recall to Santiago Bernabeu, Ceballos' time at Arsenal clearly benefitted his career, allowing him to return a stronger player thanks to Arteta's management and vision.
6. JESSE LINGARD
FROM MANCHESTER UNITED TO WEST HAM
On 29 January 2021, Jesse Lingard joined West Ham United on loan until the end of the season, where he reunited with former Manchester United boss David Moyes.
Scoring 9 goals in just 16 appearances, Lingard's impact was undeniable. His loan stint at West Ham proved transformative for all involved. Lingard brought a renewed offensive spark that lifted West Ham up the table, showing individual brilliance to power their European charge. Midfield creativity and goals were restored through Lingard's influence.
Manchester United also gained considerable advantages. The loan allowed Ole Gunnar Solskjaer an opportunity to observe Lingard's resurgence from abroad. After regaining confidence and form at West Ham, Lingard returned to Old Trafford looking closer to his best, a reinvigorated option for Solskjaer's plans going forward. Both parties mutually benefitted from this strategic move.
7. JOAO CANCELO
FROM MANCHETER CITY TO BARCELONA
There's no clarity yet on if Cancelo's desire to remain at Barcelona will be granted, whether through a permanent transfer or additional loan, as he is tied to City with a contract until 2027 after re-signing in 2022. Despite consecutive loans, including previously at Bayern Munich, he has become an automatic selection in Barcelona's starting eleven, demonstrating his immense abilities as an attacking full-back. His dedication to performing at the highest level for Barcelona has made him indispensable, and his strong bond with the club leads many to speculate what the future may hold when his current loan period ends.
8. IAN MAATSEN
FROM CHELSEA TO BORUSSIA DORTMUND
Ian Maatsen departed Chelsea in January to join Dortmund on loan for the remainder of the season, having seen restricted playing time with just 15 appearances for Chelsea prior to securing his temporary move to the Bundesliga. The left-back aimed to help Dortmund reach the Champions League final when they faced each other on Tuesday night.
Maatsen has flourished since joining Dortmund on loan from Chelsea in January, playing a pivotal role as they defeated Paris Saint-Germain in the Champions League. His impressive displays earned him praise and increased his stock.
While Chelsea now hopes to sell Maatsen permanently to Dortmund, talks have reportedly stalled due to Chelsea's reluctance to trigger the £35 million release clause in Maatsen's contract, according to journalist Ben Jacobs of GIVEMESPORT. Maatsen's success at Dortmund this season suggests he could be an asset for them long-term if an agreement can be reached.
9. LOIC REMY
FROM QPR TO NEWCASTLE
Loic Remy's loan spell at Newcastle United during the 2013/14 season was a resounding success, as evidenced by his 13 league goals which made him the top scorer for the Magpies that year after joining from Queens Park Rangers.
Impressed by the 27-year-old striker's clinical finishing, Chelsea swooped in with a £10.5m offer to secure Remy's services on a permanent basis. However, as he candidly admitted, his ambition was to compete in European competition - an opportunity Newcastle could not provide after finishing ninth in the Premier League table that season, as reported by the Daily Mail.
While Remy prospered during his time at St. James' Park, scoring at a rate that attracted interest from one of England's biggest clubs, it was understandable that his aspirations led him to seek a transfer where he could fulfill his dream of gracing the European stage. Chelsea offered the international football his talent deserved.
